Creative Problem Solving Online Course - Outline

Module One: Getting Started

  • Objectives
  • Action Plans

Section Two: The Problem Solving Method

In this Module of the Creative Problem Solving Online Certificate course, we define “problem” and the concept of solving problems using a creative process.

What is a Problem?

A problem can be defined as a scenario where the current situation does not match expectations.

What is Creative Problem Solving?

Creative problem solving is a structured approach to finding solution which involves creativity and innovation.

What are the Steps in the Creative Solving Process?

  • Information gathering
  • Problem definition
  • Generating possible solutions
  • Analyzing possible solutions
  • Selecting best solutions
  • Planning next course of action

Module Three: Gathering Information

Here we discuss the first step in the creative problem solving process and explore the different types of information.

Understanding Types of Information

  • Fact
  • Opinion
  • Opinionated Fact
  • Concept
  • Assumption
  • Procedure
  • Process
  • Principle

Identifying Key Questions

It is important that you identify key questions for a new problem to get the best insights for the problem. Start your inquiry with:

  • Who?
  • When?
  • What?
  • Why?
  • Which?
  • How?
  • Where?

Methods of Gathering Information

The method of gathering information depends on the problem and circumstances. We discuss some of these methods on how you could collect information. Examples include:

  • Conduct interviews
  • Identify and study statistics
  • Sending questionnaires
  • Conduct technical experiments
  • Create focus groups to discuss the problem

Module Four: Problem Definition

This part of the course discusses the next step in the creative problem solving process and introduces several tools that can be used to define a problem.

Defining the Problem

This is the first step in the creative problem solving process. it is a critical step since it will affect how you determine the solutions or solutions that are available.

Determining Where the Problem Originated

Successful problem solving involves getting to the root of the problem. This can be answered by:

  • Clarify the situation
  • Challenging assumptions
  • Determine possible reasons
  • Exploring different perspectives
  • Ask more about the original question

Defining the Present and the Desired State

This tool lets you write a statement of the situation as it currently exists and then lets you write a statement of what you would like the situation to look like.

Stating and Restating the Problem

The statement and restatement technique use various triggers to help identify the problem. These triggers include:

  • Placing emphasis on different words in the statement
  • Replacing and substituting words
  • Rephrasing the statement
  • Add or change words that indicate quantity, time, etc.
  • Replace or eliminate persuasive or opinionated words

Analyzing the Problem

Identifying the cause of the problem and determining the extent of the problem. Questions to ask:

  • What
  • Where
  • When
  • Extent

Writing the Problem Statement

We discuss the importance of writing the problem statement accurately and how it can help in determining the best potential solutions.

  • Include specific details about the problem
  • Should not include possible causes or solutions

Module Five: Getting Prepared to Brainstorming

This module prepares the way for creativity before starting with the problem solving process. it discusses common mental block and who to deal with it.

Identifying Mental Blocks

Brainstorming is an effective method for finding solutions to a problem. However, you must first remove any possible obstacle such as a mental block. Below are some of the common causes of mental blocks:

  • Emotions
  • Distractions
  • Assumptions
  • Culture
  • Communication difficulties

Removing Mental Blocks

The next step after identifying possible causes of mental blocks is to remove these. Here we will learn about the various techniques that help address specific causes of mental blocks.

Stimulating Creativity

The creative problem solving process requires creativity and sadly, many people feel they are not creative. This part of the course helps you access your creative potential and how to turn it on or off when needed. Here are a few techniques for stimulating creativity

  • Step outside for a few minutes for a walk
  • Change of location
  • Deep breathing
  • Meditate

Module Six: Generating Solutions, Part One

In this module, we discuss the different methods for generating solutions and an introduction to the basics of brainstorming.

Basic Brainstorming

Basic brainstorming sessions are used to generate as many ideas as possible. These solutions can be used as springboards to other ideas, helping you build an even larger pool of ideas.

Brainwriting and Mind Mapping

Brainwriting is an idea generating technique similar to brainstorming albeit done in silence. It involves the use of sheets of paper and writing their ideas.

Mind Mapping

Similar to brainwriting but can be done alone. It starts by writing one main idea in the center of the paper and creating additional ideas around this idea.

Module Seven: Generating Solutions, Part Two

In this module, we will learn about additional tools and information to consider when generating solutions.

The Morphological Matrix

This is a method of listing examples of different attributes or issues to a problem. The Morphological Matrix is a grid with several different columns. The problem solvers enter a specific attribute or issue about the item or problem at the top of each column. Then for each column, problem solvers generate a list of examples for that attribute.

The Six Thinking Hats

This concept works on the premise that the brain thinks about things in a number of different ways. These are assigned color-coded “hats.” The hats provide a structure way of thinking about different aspects of a problem. The six thinking hat methodology allows a deliberate focusing during problem solving sessions.

Module Eight: Analyzing Solutions

After gathering as many ideas and possible solutions, the next step is to analyze the solutions and the effectiveness of each one. In this part of the Creative Problem Solving Online Certificate course, we discuss the criteria or goals for solving the problem and differentiating between wants and needs.

Developing Criteria

Here we will learn about developing criteria that possible solutions should meet to be considered effective. This can include:

  • Asking questions that isolate the necessary outcome for the problem resolution
  • Determining what the solution should do or not do
  • Think about what values should be considered

Analyzing Wants and Needs

Wants and needs are fundamental to solving the problem. However, to provide clearer solutions, you must first differentiate wants from needs.

Using Cost/Benefit Analysis

Include all costs and benefits to determine the true value of a solution. Values and benefits must be of the same unit, this is why monetary value is recommended.

Module Nine: Selecting a Solution

This module discusses how to select one or more solutions from the different ideas presented. By shortening your list of possibilities, this step helps you do a final analysis and come with one of more of the best solutions to the problem.

Doing a Final Analysis

This stage helps you weigh the potential advantages and disadvantages of a solution. During the final analysis you should consider its compatibility with your priorities and values, its practicality, and potential results of each solution.

Paired Comparison Analysis

This method prioritizes a small number if workable solutions. It involves listing all of the possible solutions and assigning them a number based on strength.

Analyzing Potential Problems

This step lets you check for any potential problems related with the solution. Consider the likeliness of this occurring and its severity. These problems are then factored in when evaluating the solution.

Module Ten: Planning Your Next Steps

After selecting one or more solutions, the next step is to implement these solutions.

Identifying Tasks

This part of the course helps you identify the steps for implementing the solution. It helps you determine critical tasks from non-critical tasks. Letting you better allocate time and resources as permitted.

Identifying Resources

This part of the creative problem solving process focuses on the resources for making the solution a reality. It takes into consideration all the things required to implement the solution. Below are some of the resources we will be discussing in this step:

  • Time
  • Personnel
  • Equipment
  • Money
  • Information

Implementing, Evaluating, and Adapting

This is the time to take action. This is the time to use your project management skills to ensure that the solution is fully implemented.

Module Eleven: Lessons Learned

In this module, we discuss how to apply what we have learned in the earlier modules to make solving future problems easier.

Planning the Follow-up Meeting

Plan a follow-up meeting is recommended after the solution as been implemented. A few things to consider during this meeting include:

  • Have a clear agenda
  • Invite all key members
  • Send the invites with plenty of time to ensure all members can be present

Celebrating Successes

Make sure to celebrate the things that went well in the problem solving process and recognize the contributions of all team members.

Identifying Improvements

Take a careful note of all lessons learned to make future improvements easier.

Module Twelve: Wrapping Up
